According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the meaning of the word chesterfield dates back to the 1800’s and was used to describe a leather couch. Many believe it is a word that has been adopted to describe a regular everyday sofa in Canada and some parts of America.
Another theory is It’s said the term Chesterfield is named after the Earl of Chesterfield, after he commissioned a piece of fine crafted furniture, in this case a Chesterfield Sofa.
It’s also said that the term refers the iconic styling that is the deep buttoning used on the sofa, as well as the shape and height of the sofa itself. Since the 18th century the deep buttoning of furniture was said to be a fashionable choice, however in fabric not leather.
