The Chesterfield Sofa was named after the Earl of Chesterfield in the coursework of the 18th century. The Earl at this time requested a piece of furniture in which men could sit upright while still feeling comfortable. The couch was understandably seen as a sophisticated piece of furniture, having been commissioned by the Earl of Chesterfield himself.
The Chesterfield Sofa has had lots of different uses throughout history. A Chesterfield Sofa has elegance & status, & as such they have been used in formal settings more so than in more laid-back environments.
In the coursework of Victorian times, the Chesterfield couch was the point of interest of the lounge where men would sit to relax while females would sit on other pieces of furniture. Later on, the largest association that Chesterfield sofas had was psychoanalysts, since Sigmund Freud used it whilst treating his patients. Finally Chesterfield sofas became more widespread, & entered positive places such as coffee shops & wine bars. In such establishments, the Chesterfield couch greatly added to the elegance & atmosphere of the place.
The thing Chesterfields have had in common throughout history is that they are the epitome of elegance & grandeur, & this sense of elegance & grandeur is as strong today as it was in the coursework of Victorian times, despite the different makes use of of the sofas. Historically, only the elite could enjoy the look & feel that only a Chesterfield couch could bring, but today anyone can. Chesterfield settees come in all shapes & sizes, meaning they are more versatile these days than ever before, so that they can fit in to modern offices, living rooms & lots of other environments.
